The Sunshine Approach: Making a Difference One Cashew at a Time

The Sunshine Nut Company, a cashew roasting company in Mozambique, founded by former Hershey executive Don Larson, is making a difference in the lives of African orphans.  Inspired by Milton Hershey, the founder of the Hershey Company, who created a school for orphans and endowed it with his entire fortune, Don Larson has focused on making a difference in communities by providing fairness, opportunity and empowerment from within.  Sunshine Nut Co. plans on reinvesting 90% of its profits back into the African community, giving 30% of profits to orphanages, 30% to quality of life projects, such as wells, sanitation, etc., and 30% to food companies adhering to Sunshine’s principles. Amazon Takes on Seamless and GrubHub with New Service

Amazon has expanded its Amazon Local services to include food takeout and delivery from participating restaurants in the Seattle area.  This expansion directly positions companies like Seamless and GrubHub in Amazon’s crosshairs, as it looks to dominate the market. So far, the service has followed Amazon’s typical launch path, as the service is currently only available in the company’s home base and test market of Seattle.  With 20 restaurants offering delivery, and 110 for takeout, the service still appears to be in test mode.  In comparison, Grub Hub offers takeout and delivery in 600 cities across more than 28,000 restaurants.  In Seattle alone, Grub Hub has partnered with 468 restaurants. This service expansion appears to be part of a larger initiative by Amazon to increase…

Reducing Food Waste- Infographics from GMA, FMI and NRA

The amount of food wasted in the US, and the amount of people who lack access to safe and nutritious food in the US,  provide two compelling reasons to join forces to reduce waste.  The Food Waste Reduction Alliance, comprised of the FMI, GMA, and NRA organizations, was founded to do exactly that. The organization is moving forward with a three pronged approach.  First, the Alliance plans on reducing the amount of food waste generated.  Second, the organization aims to increase safe food donations to those in need.  Finally, the group plans on reducing the remaining amount of food waste by diverting it from the landfill to be recycled. The Food Waste Reduction Alliance released a new paper, with several interesting infographics, detailing the state…

Dabba-What? Dabbawalla!

As mentioned last week, Starbucks hopes to begin desk delivery in select urban markets as early as next year. Desk delivery in a crowded city environment sounds equally like a new complex innovation and a logistical nightmare. But what if a vastly successful delivery system already existed?  What could we learn from it? On the other side of the globe, in Mumbai, India, a group of dabbawallas have already accomplished what Starbucks is trying to do next year, and have been doing it for over 125 years with great success and little acclaim (except a Harvard Business Review case study and a Six Sigma certification). What is a dabbawalla? Literally translated, the word means “lunch box deliverer”. Every day, thousands of dabbawallas pick up lunches from office workers’…

Customers pay a membership fee ($59.95) for the benefit of curation and a rough 25-50% discount off retail prices. CEO Gunnar Lovelace says, “Who has time to figure out which of the 25 almond butters to buy.” Thrive Market offers…

Click & Collect Comes to New Hampshire

There are lots of great things going on in grocery delivery.  I get excited about tests of home delivery in San Francisco and New York.  I am envious of Peapod services in Boston.  Those of us who live in rural areas know that we are not likely to see drones in the sky any time soon.  So I was thrilled when Hannaford announced that Hannaford To Go, a click and collect service, was opening at my local store.  Order I tried it out Saturday amid a torrential downpour.  From the comfort of my living room chair, I placed my order.  The website was clunky but manageable.  I ordered at 8:39 am.  The earliest pick-up time offered was 1:00 pm.  I chose 2:00 to 3:00 pm. …
