Amazon’s Dash Buttons: Convenience of the Future

Originally announced on March 31st, Amazon’s Dash Buttons were first thought to be an April Fool’s joke; however, the one-touch purchase gadgets are very much real and are now available for purchase.  Released within the past week, the buttons, which are physical Wi-Fi enabled devices, allow users to order popular household items from certain brands such Tide, Bounty, Cottonelle, Gillette, and many more (a list of all available buttons can be found at the end of this post). The purpose of the Dash Buttons is to allow consumers to conveniently reorder products from popular brands like groceries, toilet paper, paper towels, detergent, diapers, personal care items, and even pet supplies.  The actual button can either be hung on a wall or hook or can be stuck on most surfaces thanks to a reusable adhesive found on the back of the device.

For the initial setup, the devices are connected to the consumers Wi-Fi and then link to the user’s Amazon Mobile app on their smartphone. From here, the users pick which SKU they want associated with the Amazon Dash button. For example, the Bounty button can be programmed to order 8-, 12-, or 16-packs of Bounty paper towels.

Currently, Amazon offers consumers 18 different Dash Buttons with each one costing $5, and they available only to Amazon Prime members. If a success, the service will surely expand to more brands and products. These gadgets illustrate the progress towards an intricate physical internet in a future where shoppers use devices to enhance the purchase of consumer packaged goods. Amazon’s Dash Buttons are surely something to keep an eye on.
